A little about me
I bring over 25 years of experience as an educator and my deep-seated passion for teaching to all my students. I originally entered the teaching profession to share my love of science and to get kids excited about it. However, it didn't take long to find teaching offered so much more. Nothing is more satisfying than to see a student's excitement for learning new things, or that "look" they get when a difficult concept finally "clicks", and most of all, when I am told by a student or parent that I have made a difference.
I have a B.S. in biology and a minor in chemistry from the University of Utah and worked in a biology lab while earning my degree. I taught middle school science in Salt Lake City School District where I was nominated twice for" Teacher of the Year." In addition, I have taught in the Park City area for the last 14 years in a variety of capacities. I hold a current Teaching License in the state of Utah and am endorsed in secondary science, and am first-aid and CPR certified. I have spent the majority of my life outdoors, hiking, nordic and alpine skiing, river running, backpacking, and climbing.
Why I created Summit Learning LLC
I created Summit Learning LLC for several reasons. The main reason is to make a difference. My mission is to offer the highest quality outdoor education and science camps in Park City and beyond, as well as, to create a unique opportunity where kids can have positive and meaningful experiences in nature while learning and doing science. I believe my experience, combined with my passion for teaching, science, and the outdoors allows me to do that. Being involved in public education, I see a great need for the type of science education I offer. Teaching science is often about a collection of facts. As Martin H. Fischer, physician and author, said, "facts are not science - as the dictionary is not literature". Although content is important, science is also a process of discovery. The process entails using skills like observing, inquiring, and inferring to name a few, as well as, incorporating math and writing skills. I have always maintained that students need to "do" science to understand what it truly is. I have created a curriculum where students use and learn these skills and "do" science.
Through my tutoring services I also want to make a difference by helping children succeed and provide a positive experience, particularly in math and science, which are often identified by students as their least favorite and/or worst subjects. I believe all students are capable of learning and succeeding with the right help and support.
